If you are thinking of having some photographs taken of your new bundle of joy, but you are not sure how it works and what to expect, then please keep reading. If possible it is best to photograph babies within the first 2 weeks of life. This is because they are at their most sleepy, their skin is usually clear and they are fairly amenable to being moved around without waking up. However, my preference is to photograph your new addition when you are ready, that might be after a few days of them being born or it might be a few weeks. It is best to contact me before baby is due (around the time of your 20 week scan) that way I can make sure to keep some dates free in my diary around babes due date. I carry out newborn sessions in your home. This means that you don’t need to worry about packing up the millions of things you seem to need to take everywhere with you when you have a new baby. Also by being in the comfort of your own home I believe it allows you to feel relaxed which often makes the baby feel more relaxed. I usually allow up to four hours for a newborn session - This allows plenty of time for feeding, nappy changes and time for baby to fall sleep. It's a good idea to make sure the house is warm – a contented baby is usually one that is warm and has a full tummy. If your baby is unhappy at any point during your shoot we can take a break and continue once you feel he/she is ready. When I arrive at your house one of the first things I like to do is take a quick look around and find the best location to set up. All the photographs on my website are lit using natural light. This means that I need plenty of natural window light and that is what I’ll be looking for. Please don’t worry if the place is untidy I completely understand that you are busy with your new little one. The session is unique to you and your house, I do bring a long a bean bag but if the bedroom has good light then the bed works just as well. I do not pose the babies as such, I tend to find that babies get into positions that they feel comfortable in. I will however make a few adjustments if I feel it will make the final image look better. You are requesting me to photograph your newborn but along with them I love including mums and dads in my images – you make great props. It is also really important for me to make sure I have some shots of you as a family, this is a special time and moments that you will treasure in years to come. I love to lay the baby on blankets that belong to them, It helps to make the photographs unique to you. It’s also helpful if you dress your baby in something simple, sometimes the best shots are when they are in a plain white vest. This is just a guideline to how a session normally works so that you know roughly what to expect.
